The Young Anglicans Project

Godparent and sponsor resources

I am posting a collection of materials I devised when I was involved as a catechist in the Rite for Christian Initiation of Adults in my former Roman Catholic Parish. The document entitled "Contents" has a fuller explanation and a breakout of the other documents and how they were used.

The initiative came out of a recognition that godparents and sponsors were often selected honorifically and frequently had little involvement in the faith life of the person preparing for baptism, confirmation, or reception into the Church, and in too many cases had little or no faith life or church involvement of their own to speak of.

Consequently, we saw this not only as a way to improve the RCIA process for the actual participants, but a means of (re-)evangelism for the godparents/sponsors.

I have tried to remove specifically Roman Catholic elements, though in some respects the expectation of liturgical involvement might suggest more immediate adaptability to an AngloCatholic or Prayer Book Catholic style. They ought to be useful in that context as well. I have not undertaken any correlation with, say, Journey to Adulthood, or any other Anglican catechumenal curriculum.

I welcome comments, critique, and suggestions about adaptation to an Anglican context. Also, if you adapt and/or use these materials, I'd appreciate a copy.
